What is Inside Plant (ISP) ?
Inside Plant applications (the most commonly known) refer to the wiring within one building. The demarcation point is typically an electrical closet or telephone room where all the wiring originates. The wiring then travels through the ceiling grid (plenum space) over to each office or desk. The inside plant infrastructure covers the wiring, the patch panels, the faceplates and all components necessary for the network to function within that 1 building.
What is Outside Plant (OSP) ?
Think of a college university campus which is way larger than just 1 building, but rather it’s made up of several buildings that need connectivity to “talk” to one another. The best way to connect these buildings onto the same network would be to run wiring (aka: infrastructure) known as fiber optic and or copper underground via a network of conduits buried beneath the concrete/soil. The cables installed in this application are usually gel-filled and or armored to stand up against the elements. Sometimes OSP installations involve running cables across rivers or lakes where other routes are not possible. Special cables are available for this that are more rugged and sealed. Even underwater splice hardware is available. Landings on the shore need to be planned to prevent damage, generally by burying the cable close to shore and marking the landing.
